About the Image(s)

Lake Mono along Rt 395 in California is another of my favorite photo locations. I started with the lake view.
Using Layer Masks placed the upside down Malta skyline in front of the rocks in the lake. To indicate that the upside down image was only in one location placed the sailboat in the image. Added the sail boat reflection on the lake surface to prove that.

The reflection comes as a wonderful, clever surprise. You have blended it in beautifully. The sailboat seems to be a device to pull the eye away from the reflection adding to the effect of the surprise and works very well. The rocky coast adds just the right amount of texture. Hi Aavo - Mono lake will never be the same! I think, too, that this is a delightful idea that you have skillfully made to an exciting surreal image. I think that you have selected the components perfectly: the city and the cathedral could be made of same pale yellow stone as the rock formations of the lake, the forms of the rocks mimic the city skyline, and the lighting looks identical. - I wonder if it is possible to blend the lighter blue area round the cathedral dome slightly more smoothly in the lake surface tones?   Posted: 05/08/2023 00:58:47

Hi Aavo, you have created a very pleasant composition placing the buildings reflection simulating that it was from the rock.
This create a visual contrast that introduce the idea of what you see could be not the same that it is really there. I agree with Kirsti comment about the blending around the round cathedral and maybe I would crop the sky a little to concentrate more the viewer look in the bottom of the rocks and the reflection. Aavo, I love Mono Lake. This is a compelling image with elements that nicely tie together your idea. I might consider having the building reflection closer to the tufas so as to sell the reflection better. I might also suggest working with the size of the boat some as it feels too small to my eye.   Posted: 05/13/2023 12:04:21

I like this image very much, Aavo! I really like the complementary colors of the blue water and sky against the pale yellow of the tufa and reflection. The sailboat creates the third element that draws my eye all around the image.
I particularly like your blending of the reflection of the sailboat and the left part of the Malta skyline - they both seem to ripple in the water.
