About the Image(s)

I liked the way this image from San Francisco turned out, first because of the way the fog on the back building gives some 3D, or depth to the image, and the way the train cables cross just to the right of the buildings. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I think I set up just right for this shot. What do you think? No processing.

The fog definitely draws you in to the photo. And yes, composition is great. Where the overhead cables are in the photo enhance the image. Had you been standing somewhere else, that might not have been the case.   Posted: 07/04/2024 02:27:07

Hi Jack - nice image - the fog is like nature's linear gradient. Works well! Regarding the cables - I personally find them a bit distracting (I tend to prefer clean shots like this). I'm a bit bothered by the fact that they overlap the top of the church (one of the more important parts of the frame). If I was shooting this in the future - might leave the cables in - but try to move to a spot where they frame (but don't overlap) the top of the church. I can see that others may find the current location another layer of depth/interest that improve the picture.   Posted: 07/07/2024 12:50:06

Hi Jack,
The fog has created a different feeling to the scene. It creates a blurred background and makes St Mary's cathedral stand out more. I like the perspective exaggeration effect of the wide angle shot that also includes the train cables on the top. It marks a kind of historic icon of San Francisco. I don't have any suggestion for improvement. Nice shot!   Posted: 07/18/2024 17:10:48

Jack, the fog adds an interest to this image. I found the wires distracting, however, they are a part of the scene of San Francisco.   Posted: 07/19/2024 14:36:32

As long as perspective gets distorted anyhow from this low angle, the cable car wires give this shot a unique off-beat frame against the fogginess that make it distinctly a San Francisco shot! It's neat that you were able to incorporate the cables as part of the final image instead of removing them.   Posted: 07/22/2024 16:51:30

I agree with others that this is a distinctly San Francisco shot with the fog rolling in or out in the background.Appreciate the contrast with an old church and a modern highrise. The overhead cables filled in some of the negative space in the upper right. The cables formed an image of a cross which I did not catch initially.I think the spiritual icon makes the image even stronger.
