August 2026 - My First Rodeo

This past Saturday, August 1, one of our camera club members arranged for us to attend and photograph a private local rodeo. We were fortunate to have close access to the enclosure, giving us an excellent opportunity to capture the action.
Although I photographed most of the event with my “big boy” camera, I also took the opportunity to use my iPhone. I had it set to burst mode and captured 42 images by holding down the volume-up button.
This image required very little post-processing. I adjusted the white and black points and applied sharpening with Topaz AI.
Pardon the pun, but this really was my first rodeo.

Great action shot! I've never photographed a rodeo - you did well for a newbie! The rider is sharp, love the red blouse, kicked up dirt and angle of the horse. The crowds in the background are perfect; they tell the story without distracting. Do you think the barrel on the lower right adds to the image? Posted: 08/04/2026 23:37:28
Bill, great shot!! Sharp and wonderful color. Yes, the barrel in lower corner is important as the girl is barrel racing. Hope you give the girl a copy of this image. Posted: 08/14/2026 16:48:58

You've got a great action shot of a rodeo when the rider and her horse turned tightly around a barrel! I like that the horse is facing your camera while he is galloping along a curved path. I'd prefer to see the barrel in full to make the image more impactful. Posted: 08/19/2026 00:56:30

You caught the rider just at the right moment. Like Kieu-Hanh, I wish you would have gotten the full barrel, but just the bit of the barrel is an important part of this photo.
