Verasion by Jack Florence Jr

July 2026 - Verasion

About the Image(s)

In the documentary style again, "verasion" is a French term for the process when red grapes change color. It is a midpoint, or a benchmark, and a turning point in the growing season.

Photographically, I tried to focus attention on the grapes turning purple, as the focal point. Do you find too much out of focus areas to be distracting? And perhaps better suited to a traditional slr camera?

I don't have a phone vs. SLR problem with this, but I think it is a bit cluttered with so many views of different sizes of grapes. The grapes vines are often in long rows at a vineyard. Do you have any shots like that?   Posted: 07/11/2026 23:36:36

I think the iPhone did well (especially for a digitally projected image; print may be different) . . . . could always control more with you SLR; but there are tradeoffs. I agree the scene is busy - but that doesn't bother me. That's how grapes grow. I think you achieved your goal of capturing the color change; it would be interesting to reshoot this a bit later in the season, with even more change in progress. Being naive to how grapes grow - without your explanation I would not have understood what was happening. I would have found it interesting that there was one red grape in a cluster of green grapes. You live in a photographer's paradise!   Posted: 07/12/2026 11:33:45

I'm not sure what you think you could have done differently with an SLR. This is an excellent shot. I love the documentary thought.

An interesting shot might have been taken with a wider aperture. I think I would like to see just the cluster with the purple grape in focus and the rest of the scene not in as sharp focus.   Posted: 07/12/2026 18:23:40
