April 2026 - Magnolia at Smithsonian Castle

Spring is here. I am so happy that the saucer magnolia survived the bad weather this year. The image was taken 2 weeks ago at the Smithsonian Castle. The magnolia at the castle is very big and in full bloom. The entire scene is covered in the soft pink color of the flowers planted around the garden. What surprised me the most is that when the saucer magnolia is in bloom, the tree is totally covered by flowers without any leaves. I have seen other magnolia trees having fewer flowers and a lot of leaves. I did minor sharpening enhancements using Snapseed.

I love the contrast between the blooms, the branches, and the blue sky. Such a pretty springtime tree.
I have the ugly magnolia. When it was smaller, we had the benefit of the beautiful smell and the flowers at eye level. Now the tree is so tall, we never get the scent, we can't really see the flowers … and it's still ugly. Not to mention the mess it leaves. Posted: 04/02/2026 17:42:30

Thanks for your comments, Susan! Smithsonian Castle has become a famous tourist spot when the magnolia is in bloom. May be they planted special magnolia types. Posted: 04/16/2026 23:38:06

Nice, kieu-hanh, as you mentioned, it is the cleanness, the lack of any green leaves or any other distractions, that make this work. The leaning branches left and right create a triangle, very nice, and help frame the scene. Posted: 04/10/2026 01:37:12
