Water Droplet Refractions by Steven Jungerwirth

December 2025 - Water Droplet Refractions

About the Image(s)

We played with water drop refractions at a camera club mtg. In this image - a piece of glass was sprayed with Rain-X (a product that causes water to bead on glass/windshields). After drying - we sprayed the glass with water - and placed various objects under the glass. I like this shot of the flag. Most people shot with their "big boy" cameras - I tried my iPhone 14 in macro mode. Cropped and removed dust in LR.

Hi Steven,
Nice try to capture the water droplets by a mobile phone! I have tried it with a DSLR camera only, and I think that the flag in the background can be made more blurred to make the droplets stand out.
In this image, the water droplets with the reflection of US flag are quite sharp.
I'd suggest to crop tighter to focus on the droplets with their image reflection in it. Thanks for sharing your experiments!
Here is my quick crop in Snapseed.   Posted: 12/02/2025 15:54:47

Thank you. I agree the background flag could have been more blurred; unfortunately I didn't know how to do that with the iPhone (a conventional camera would have offered that capability). Regarding the crop - I'm not sure. I kind of like to include the whole flag and some background; I wish the background was something more interesting (or black). I may try this set-up at home; seems like there are so many possibilities.   Posted: 12/06/2025 10:41:58

Great idea and execution, Steven. It's quite compelling! I think Kieu-Hanh is on to something with that crop, it's neater, focuses the attention better. But it could just be one of those with several possibilities for good images.   Posted: 12/09/2025 23:00:41
