About the Image(s)
Who says panoramas need to be horizontal? I have had the opportunity to photograph this church in downtown Detroit on numerous occasions. Following a sunday service I decided to make a vertical panorama. It's not easy tilting an iPhone backwards but it takes some practice to get it right. This was photographed with my iPhone 14 Pro Max on the wide angle setting. The majority of the post work was done in Lightroom Mobile with a final pass in Photoshop to tweak the perspective and add a small stroke. Shot in RAW format.

The vertical pano idea works really well on a scene like this, Bill. Although there is some distortion as there always is in phone panos, it's very orderly and in keeping with the patterns we're accustomed to seeing on cathedral ceilings. It's fun, and interesting to ponder! It's amazing that you captured all the way to the back wall, and still got the pews on the floor too.   Posted: 07/07/2025 23:19:51
Hi, Bill, welcome to the 86 group! This is a fantastic image. the colors, sharpness, and composition are very good. You have steady hands to be able to do this.   Posted: 07/08/2025 16:58:58
Welcome to group - and thanks for the reminder to think of vertical for panos and merges. Your image is interesting - the pews are sharp and not distorted. Curious why you think there is so much more distortion along the walls/ceiling/back. While some may find the distortion aesthetically pleasing - I find it a bit of a distraction and artificial. Nice job capturing the stained glass window behind you - makes the viewer work to understand what we're seeing - that helps create/maintain interest. Well done!   Posted: 07/11/2025 21:44:25
Hi Bill,
It's an amazing vertical panoramic photo! The church itself is well lit and has colorful stained glass windows from the altar to the back and on both sides.
Your panning is great with the symmetry on both sides that make the glass windows appear tidy and neat.
One minor suggestion is to crop off the last pews at the bottom of the image since the bright lights on the floor could stop the viewer's eyes there.   Posted: 07/23/2025 02:57:48

Welcome to the group ,Bill!I like the contemporary view of this traditional interior.Amazing composition for a pano and a vertical one at that.I would also recommend cropping out some pews in the foreground to strengthen the image.   Posted: 07/28/2025 01:13:18
