Pacific Pier and Lights by Wayne Angeloty

January 2025 - Pacific Pier and Lights

About the Image(s)

Shot this intense sunset and pier scene with long exposure with Google phone. I was trying to level horizon a bit and straighten lightpost on right. However,it caused the pier and horizon to appear more crooked. So based on initial view, the lightpost did appear to be slanted. So,I left it the way it was viewed because horizon did appear level.
Suggestions? I did have to wait until I had a clear view because there were a lot of people walking on the pier.

Nice image - great color. I agree with you - the horizon is level - and that lamppost is crooked. It does make the scene more interesting - since it encourages the viewer to figure out what's happening. Curious what you mean by long exposure with Google phone - the water does not have the smooth appearance typically seen with a long exposure.   Posted: 01/11/2025 19:51:50

Hi Steven, Glad you asked the question about long exposure. The Google cell has a setting for long exposures.Usually get a smooth appearance with movement in the image. The sea was pretty calm, but I was going for the moving clouds to create an impressionistic painting effect.I think it all depends on the algorithms at the time which can be highly variable depending on the focal length, lighting, and exposure.I'm still working on getting consistent results.   Posted: 01/14/2025 21:07:48

Thank you! I'm not familiar with the google phone . . . iPhone sound similar - the software does so much in the background - often with techniques quite different from film photography and in my experience the results that are also different. The phones will only keep getting better.   Posted: 01/14/2025 21:29:11

Wayne, good idea to get the sunset level with the pier. I also wonder what is a Google phone?   Posted: 01/14/2025 16:09:52

Hi Wayne,
Your image of Pacific pier is intriguing since the angle of your shot makes it different than the norm. The red color of the horizon, the drama clouds and the golden water emphasized the pier more.
I'd prefer to crop tighter from the top to reduce the empty sky on the top right area and to make the composition stronger, and to have a bit of separation between the pier and the water line.   Posted: 01/16/2025 03:15:34
