Florence in the Rain by Mark Fox

May 2023 - Florence in the Rain

About the Image(s)

The last day of our tour through Florence, Italy was overcast and threatening rain. When a downpour suddenly caught us the only shelter was to hop onto a city bus. It slowly wended its way out of the city into the surrounding hills, and we were treated to this beautiful view of the city. I shot this with a Canon SX50. In post processing I did a lot of work in Photoshop RAW to first bring up the exposure and bring out the colors of the cityscape. Next I had to work on the sky - in the original a dull grey mass - to bring out the storm clouds and the rain. It has been one of my favorites.

Mark, indeed you must have done a lot of work in Photoshop. I like the way you brought out the rain clouds and the image is balanced by the three spires. It is a complex image; perhaps, increasing highlights in the foreground while slightly darkening the background might add depth and better define the foreground as the primary subject?   Posted: 05/08/2023 20:38:22

Thank you Charles. I see where you're going with this; the foreground does need more light. I never noticed it until now.   Posted: 05/10/2023 16:53:34

Hi Mark, thanks for sharing the image. It is a beautiful view of the town in Florence. Color of foreground is balanced between yellow and dark red of roofs, that is very harmonic. The sky and top mountain on right I would think to see more on the original image to evaluate that saturation. Also if you provide metadata of the image like ISO, exposure, speed.. I would give some suggest about noise on sky, or it just be the rain. Thanks   Posted: 05/10/2023 14:27:52

Thanks for your comments. The Metadata from the Canon SX 50 were: Exposure: 1/200; ISO: 80; Aperture: 4.0; White Balance: Auto   Posted: 05/10/2023 17:03:24

What a wonderful city for photography! First, the horizon line is a bit off and there seems to be a lot of noise in the sky (see my added photo which compensated for those). I also would delete that little "thing" that come sin from the left just above the horizon line. Some dodging and burning might more DOF both in the sky and the buildings leading up to Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo). With a little more playing around, you'll have a masterpiece here!   Posted: 05/27/2023 11:21:18
