Take our picture! by Karen Johnson-Nieuwendijk

May 2019 - Take our picture!

About the Image(s)

This is a photo I took on the Charles Bridge in Prague a couple years ago. These 3 were taking pictures of each other and said "Take our photo, Take our photo" so I did. Cute kids. Canon 7D Mark 2, F 14, 1/15 sec. ISO 100. I cropped, upped the contrast and clarity in Lightroom.

Hi Karen,
This is where I was first introduced to ' street photography'. In the 'Old Square, Prague in 2014.
Love the position of the three subjects, I would have been unable to hand hold the camera at 1/15sec but you have managed to produce a sharp image.
Like that the seated girl, front right has her left leg pointing forward which leads one's eye into the image. Great colours. Great image.   Posted: 05/06/2019 16:19:06

Perfect not so candid. Color, positioning, everything fell right into line.   Posted: 05/10/2019 14:02:29

Beverly, No not candid. They posed themselves. I just snapped the picture.   Posted: 05/10/2019 15:43:55

This image raises several questions in my mind. The young lady in the red dress appears to be squinting yet she is facing away from the sun based on how the shadows fall. Why is she squinting? Then there's the fact that they all seem to be looking in different directions and none are looking at you, which seems strange. And I have the question of why you were shooting at a low shutter speed on what appears to be a fairly bright day? At that shutter speed and at ISO 100, I would have expected this image to be fully blown out.

But I like the pose and I like the use of leading lines with the outstretched leg.

I hope I don't seem too critical on this, but I'm truly having a hard time understanding it. I think it's a great idea, and I think it could be a powerful photograph.   Posted: 05/10/2019 16:46:21

J. Lanning Smith, It was an early morning shot with the sun coming up behind me so the sun was in their faces. I usually shoot aperture priority so did not set the shutter speed myself. The camera decided that. As I said they posed themselves very quickly and I just snapped the shot.

Except for the day it rained, I don't think there was ever enough open space on the Charles Bridge for composing a shot like this in the week I was in Prague.
You definitely captured the happy mood of the group of friends. I'm guessing they picked the pose and you picked the composition? Nice shot!   Posted: 05/22/2019 14:39:20

Bill, I was walking across the bridge and the girl behind the seated girls was taking the others picture and so they were already posed. The third girl ran behind them when I snapped the shot.   Posted: 05/27/2019 07:38:23

Karen

Not to get all Photo-Technical, but your photo is the "picture perfect " (pun intended) example of the rule of thirds.

Very well composed, the faces/skin tones are perfect with no shadows from their hats and sunlight.

A very fun and well composed photo.

Thanks for sharing
