Dhananjay Rao
About the Image(s)
River Ganges or Ganga is considered sacred in India and the city of Varanasi or Kashi or Benaras is one of the holiest and oldest inhabited cities in the world.
This particular scene depicts how busy the banks of the river are. Scenes included the docked boats and various paved banks serving different religious significance, each being busy at different times of the day. I was at a higher level to take this shot.
Selected monochrome as I found it carrying more impact than the color. Original attached.

Interesting comparison of the colored and BNW. I actually really love the color one, it draws you in because of the bright colors and you can see the activity you are describing. On the other hand the black and white make the image look old and more sedate. The one suggestion...which I'll make before Ian beats me to it. You have a few dust spots in the sky :-)
Is there significant pollution in this area as well? There is a definite haze ....and no I would not try to remove that, it is part of the image that speaks to the area.   Posted: 09/12/2023 09:53:11

Thanks, Sherry. I agree with the haze comment, I felt the same. More than pollution - the 'Ghats' or the 'Holy Banks' on the river are bustling with a lot of religious activities. There are open crematoriums at the banks(very sacred to be cremated in that town) which create smoke and hence the haze.
I will ensure that I clean up the spots, sorry for missing that.   Posted: 09/29/2023 18:33:57

I must say that I like both images, but like the crop on the BnW one better. Well done.   Posted: 09/24/2023 10:10:58

I like both versions Dhananjay, the colour gives the scene life and vitality, while the B&W gives it a serenity and a sense of age. Taking out that distracting element on the right side above the tree was a definite must. Your viewpoint also provides good depth as the shore curves around. Well done to you. And also to Sherry regarding the dust spots.   Posted: 09/25/2023 03:30:51
Sherry did beat you to spot the spots... Again sorry for missing that.

I like the B&W image as it seems to have more contrast and is more pleasing to my eye. In B&W, I see more of the overall image and story while I get caught up in the smaller items, people, umbrellas, etc., in the color image. I think it's well cropped and I like the composition where the river curves to the left and give the impression of something else coming as my eye follows the river.   Posted: 09/25/2023 08:57:25
I like them both - I know that is kind of a cop out, but I do. I think the B&W one with the crop is a better image but between the color and B&W even for me.   Posted: 09/29/2023 15:01:36
