Yosemite Falls by Dave Ficke

September 2023 - Yosemite Falls

About the Image(s)

Shot of Yosemite Falls in winter - as you can see, the mist coats the sidewalls with ice at night and freezes. As the sun comes over during the day and heats up the wall - it sounds like plate glass crashing to the bottom and very impressive.

Nikon D800, 17-35mm lens hand held. No other info for the image, went through DeNoise and just a cool - haha shot

I think you must love the cold! that is a great image of Yosemite Falls....Ive never been but I've heard at certain times it is very difficult to get a spot to take images, is that true?

Now as for this image...I love the info you gave and would expect that is an incredible experience. The image is gorgeous even to the trees on the top. I would expect that seeing and hearing the ice breaking is pretty remarkable. Have you ever taking a video of the falls when this is happening?   Posted: 09/12/2023 09:46:08

Sherry - Yes, I love the cold, snow - being up in the mountains where the sky is blue and cross country skiing - making your own tracks (hard work) and then at the end of the day packing the snow down to set up a tent - and then there are the stars - they feel special in winter.

Being in Yosemite is one of my favorite places and yes the crashing of the ice from the rock wall is very loud. If I stair there are times you can see the ice falling -

The park receives about 4.5 million visitors a year and summer times getting a shot of the falls is almost impossible without people, winter - very different story.   Posted: 09/12/2023 12:45:25

A very strong image Dave, with a good sense of location in winter. I have trouble getting my head around temperatures so cold that they can freeze a waterfall. My only question is if it's possible to bring some detail into the foreground trees, rather than have them remain featureless silhouettes? But still, a great image.   Posted: 09/25/2023 03:22:29

What a memorable catch to be at the falls early on a winter morning to see the ice on the walls. I would agree that reducing shadows on the foreground trees to make them more that silhouettes might enhance the image. As it is, my eye goes beyond them to the falls and trying to understand what has happened, so your explanation helps understand what I'm seeing. A beautiful image in a great location.   Posted: 09/25/2023 08:51:13

What a shot! Love the portrait orientation and the overall composition. It has a cinematic feel to it. Beautiful colors, lighting, and sky. Snow just takes it to another level.   Posted: 09/29/2023 18:19:00
