Water Fountain by Bill Provost

October 2018 - Water Fountain

About the Image(s)

How I Did It: This is an image of the water fountain in our yard. We enjoy the soothing sound of the water throughout the summer evenings. It also serves as a water source for the birds for bathing and drinking (and squabbling over who gets to use it first!). The image was taken with a Nikon D800, with a Micro Nikkor 105mm 1:2.8 lens. The settings were 1/400 seconds, F10; ISO400. I focused to get the water flowing out of the top portion of the fountain into the center reservoir.

I really like your capture of the water: it's clear, it's captured at a speed that feels calming to me as a viewer, and you have captured good balance of the highlights and shadows as well as the depth of focus. There is great detail even in the shadows. My only thought is that I wonder what would have happened had you included just a bit more on the top of the fountain? It feels tight at the top edge. But I do like this image!   Posted: 10/06/2018 21:18:11

Hi Bill - I just love the light and how you used it to strenghten the visual impact of the image. I like the strong light hitting the outside frame of the fountain, it is very stark and then you have the light playing on the water inside the fountain - shadows and highlights swirling in tones of ochre and blues - well seen. The bubbles add a lovely touch of fun and depth to the image. I also would have liked to have seen more of the top of the image. cheers Nadia   Posted: 10/07/2018 14:33:57

Hi Bill:
Our personal gardens, if we are fortunate to have one, certainly provide a variety of photo opportunities. I have no bird bath, just a wide spout from a water pump but is certainly attracts a variety of flyers. I have to agree that seeing more at the top of the picture might have been useful. Your settings have facilitated a view of flowing water, bubbles and soft colors that just call for the birds to participate.   Posted: 10/09/2018 13:20:09

Hi Bill
Good image; water flow, always a good subject to explore. As mentioned, I like the speed and flow and your exposure allow for capturing the bubbles. I agree that showing more of the top would strengthen the image. I think viewers would wonder what the top looks like. Maybe a vertical format would provide that full view, and also eliminate the white hot spots in the three corners. I would never thought to use a shutter speed of 1/400 of a second but it really works well for this image and the water in your fountain.   Posted: 10/11/2018 17:17:13
