THREE CALLAS LILLIES by Lloyd Delaney

May 2023 - THREE CALLAS LILLIES

About the Image(s)

Image Description:

I visit Descanso Gardens in La Cresenta, CA many times a year. It is like having a mini-vacation each time I go. On this day there were camellias, flowering trees, azaleas, iris and roses in bloom. However, this day was about Cala Lillies. Their form and texture is beautiful and I wanted to capture something special. The day was overcast and I was shooting in shadows. I used my Olympus OM1 micro four/thirds camera with a 60 mm f2.8 lens. I shot at ISO 800, f 6.3 at 1/125 sec. I darkened the background, added a stain to the top flower and removed lots of small spots on the flowers in photoshop.

Lloyd, Love the dark background. There are three images in this round that are semi low key. The three Callas Lillies really pop. Good tonality on the Lillies and the surrounding area certainly compliments the three subjects. I like the way you can still see the leaves. Very nice.   Posted: 05/01/2023 18:31:05

Thank you Tom,
I really enjoy working with these flowers.   Posted: 05/02/2023 12:11:39

Lloyd, I really like the beautiful soft feel you created with the way you edited this beautiful image. Like Tom, I love the dark background and the way the leaves are just barely visible. The only thing I don't like is the blue tinge on the upper edge of the top lily. I'm guessing that's the stain that you added. I love the soft whiteness of the blooms and the blue takes away a little for me.   Posted: 05/01/2023 20:25:38

Thank you Mary,
I did not notice the blue tinge until you pointed it out. I did not add a stain and I can adjust the white balance a bit to warm it up.   Posted: 05/02/2023 12:13:29

Beautiful image. Our fellow group members have more valid suggestions that I probably would not ever drram of.   Posted: 05/05/2023 11:48:58

Lloyd, this is an excellent image. I like to composition. The whites are very clean and there's very good detail in the petals. The background is very good.

You mentioned adding a "stain" to the top of the flower. I've not heard of that before. As Mary mentioned, that's likely the stain. Can you explain???

Thank you,

Hi Don, thanks for the feedback. I did not use a stain and am not sure what Mary meant. However I did warm the white balance a bit and it looks much better.   Posted: 05/05/2023 16:17:41

It seems to appear in your description - added a stain. I'm curious also as to what you meant there.   Posted: 05/27/2023 16:19:35

After looking at it more times than I can count, I finally realized what the "stain" is all about. If you can remove it, great. If not, I don't really think it's a major issue.   Posted: 05/06/2023 11:33:12

Good work very fine resolution and focus I can see the vines in the petals. There is something sticking out of the top of the fallen petal it's a small distraction you might want to edit out.   Posted: 05/17/2023 10:52:37

I like the rather soft appearance of these flowers. The unopened one breaks the duo very nicely for me. I might want to see a little brighter white on the flowers but it might be my monitor. Personally I would like to see a thin stroke to set it off from the background. Overall, very nice image.   Posted: 05/27/2023 16:22:31
