With the new AI adjustments to software, I was looking for another old photo to work on when I stumbled onto this and thought I would give it a try. I put it into several different programs because I was having a problem with the returned photo being much smaller in size. After adjusting some settings, it seems all is fine, but I was practicing and checking resolution settings with this one.
I sent it to DXO for their noise reduction (will probably use Lightroom from now on), cropped and sent it to Topaz Photo AI. In Lightroom did numerous masks to change the lighting, cloned a large branch in Photoshop, then a vignette in Lightroom

Vella, To my eye you have done an excellent job in post-processing in two key ways. I think that you have cropped to bring the viewer's eyes to the owl and avoid the distractions of background branches. Second, I believe that you have darkened the background to make the owl stand out and further become a fixation point.
Just be aware that in a PSA jurored exhibition if you change one part of an image (while leaving other parts unchanged) by more than about half of a stop (approx. .33 EV) it will probably be recognized by a judge and possibly be DQ'ed.
Nice work!   Posted: 05/04/2023 14:17:01

Gary and Vella, in any of the "Reality Divisions": Nature, Photo Travel and Photo Journalism, this type of adjustments are not allowed. You have to show the image as close to how you saw it as possible. It will work for color exhibitions.   Posted: 05/05/2023 14:20:33

Isaac, my comment to Vela is based on Rick Cloren's "You be the judge" webinars. My comment was directly from Rick. In truth, you are correct but in reality, he said that changes of less than half an EV are very very hard to detect.   Posted: 05/05/2023 15:12:03

Thank you for the comment and information. Does that count if submitted in just the Color category?

Gary, I do not want to make this an involved discussion. In the Reality Divisions of course minimal adjustments are allowed, but the Division trust your honesty. Of course, vignettes are not allowed.   Posted: 05/05/2023 16:44:11

You did a wonderful job with your post editing work. Unfortunately, the edits that you reference are not permitted in the Nature Division. I like the warm tone as it appears as a sunset or golden hour image. I interpret the composition to be as a vertical.

Hi Vella. I am not a nature photorapher so my comments are based purely on the image as pictorial. I think you have done a great job picking out this owl from a very small part of the original image. Your adjustments have brought it out from the background and the warm colour makes it feel like the end of a beautiful sunny day. Sharpness is just right. Bill's crop is good, but I also like yours too.   Posted: 05/12/2023 04:30:21

Hi Vella
For me all your hard work has paid dividends like Guy not a nature photographer not that I so not like nature photography I adore it but leave it to those who create unbeivable nature images such as my colleagues in this Group for us all to enjoy and marvel
at.The quality of this image from such a large crop is outstanding and like the others love the warm tones you have introduced it really adds to the image.
Great job Vella.

You have captured the Owl in beautiful soft light Vella. The main branch provides a strong leading line. My eye prefers a crop on the right side to remove some of the dark space. Your P.P. strengthened your offering as well.   Posted: 05/17/2023 07:01:25
