About the Image(s)

Another one that was shot last month at Oaklawn Race Track in Hot Springs, AR. Nikon D610, 28-300 at 58mm, aperture mode, 1/2500 sec, f/7.1, ISO 400. Hand held. It’s always a nice surprise when you see all four hooves off the ground in your shot, but it’s really special when you get four horses with all up—thus the title of 16 Up. In Lightroom cropped, masked the canopies to tone them down, other adjustments to bring out colors. May have put through Topaz deNoise.

Interesting that you caught them all in the air, but in my opinion the compositional elements are superior. The one third line at the horse's eye is giving space to move into while maintaining the nice triple of tents. Also the rail is serving as a directional line. Nice handling in post but might consider a sky replacement possibly with bland clouds to match the tents.   Posted: 05/01/2023 12:30:22

Thanks, Piers. I debated about sky replacement but didn't want to mess up the natural blue sky day. There were a few whiffs of clouds, and maybe I could have brought them out better.   Posted: 05/01/2023 13:39:59

Yes, it has a cooling effect. Perhaps the clouds are too bright taking away attention.   Posted: 05/02/2023 21:01:16

This is a busy, action photo. It is sharp and well caught.
I seem to be in a "cropping" mood today and would suggest cropping out the sky completely and desaturating the background ever so slightly.
Just a thought!

Great action image, Shirley. Great crop. It is interesting to see all 4 horses off the ground. The addition of the tents/canopies adds a bit of heraldry to this event, despite the fact that there are no people occupying the tents. LIke others have referenced, the blue sky is lacking excitement, so its a contrast to the excitement/action shown on the track. I think Martins crop was a bit too aggressive and the flags at the peaks of each tent should (at least) be left visible.
well done.   Posted: 05/02/2023 09:57:46

Wow, Shirley, you really caught the action! The first thing I noticed before even reading your description was that all the horses hooves were in the air!

I think I agree with the group that the edition of the clouds in the sky improves the image even though I love the contrast of the bright blue sky. If I were to crop further, I'd make sure to maintain the tops of the tents since that can be done while still eliminating the sky.   Posted: 05/02/2023 17:52:15
