About the Image(s)

I had my eye to the eyepiece when shooting butterflies in continuous mode when some larger object came to the thistle. Was thrilled to see it was a humming bird—my first ever shot of one at a flower. This was shot with Nikon D610, 200-500 lens at 450mm, f/5.6, 1/2500 second, ISO 800, aperture mode in continuous autofocus, tripod mounted. It was edited in Lightroom to adjust contrast, exposure, white & black points, clarity, dehaze, saturation, graduated filter, cropping. I used a Topaz painterly filter, masking out the bird to keep it natural, and added a border in Photoshop.

Wow! What a clear and beautiful shot. Lucky girl to catch him in action. Do not see anything you could have done better Shirley. Just fabulous!   Posted: 09/02/2019 17:51:51

Thanks, Jamie. Going to get it printed on canvas for the exhibit.   Posted: 09/02/2019 18:22:47

This is amazing, Shirley. And I'd just commented on my photo about never having used Topaz and now I definitely want to try it - what you did here with the thistle is beautiful.   Posted: 09/09/2019 19:54:15

Great catch-light and sharp wings for the shutter speed you used and brilliant use of Topaz for the background. I think the L shape of the bird, flower and bud is central to the composition so would have cropped tighter from the lower right.   Posted: 09/09/2019 21:29:10

How's this crop? I wish the bird weren't so low, but I certainly couldn't crop the upper part of the flower.   Posted: 09/11/2019 21:40:10

I know how hard it is to capture a humming bird having tried, under failing light conditions, in Costa Rica. I was not successful but certainly you were! I tend to agree with Piers about the cropping on the lower right but it's a good shot without it.   Posted: 09/10/2019 16:25:04

I agree....requires setting up for the shot etc. Perfect crop!   Posted: 09/12/2019 11:45:33
