About the Image(s)

There has been a lot of talk in recent rounds about capturing images at high f-stop values so I thought I would give it a try. This image was captured at f/40. I just missed getting everything in focus and could not convince it any better in either Lightroom or Topaz Photo AI. I think this subject just requires stacking to get that much depth of field.

In post processing I couldn’t decide if I should leave the ant in the picture or not. What do you think? It doesn’t really add anything to the image but it is there. I don’t know!

Specs:
Nikon Z6
Nikon 105mm micro lens
ISO 100, f/40 at 1/13 second

I would take the ant out. It is fuzzy in places even at the tip of the stamen (? not sure that is the correct name) so really wonder if the fuzziness is movement as 1/13 is slow. It is also fuzzy 2/3 of the way into the flower but not below that making me think there was some movement causing the blurring as well. A pretty flower and angle   Posted: 07/05/2026 15:43:16

I love the image, and I would remove the ant. It is too small relative to the rest of the image to lend any value or interest. Beautiful lighting and the right amount of softness. I think just a bit of movement at the very foremost tip. Frankly, without focus stacking, I feel like you did an amazing job on this subject. It has very nice balance to it and the crop works really well. Extremely sharp detail except for two small places so I think that the same image with focus stacking would have been the last thing you needed for it to be perfect.   Posted: 07/05/2026 15:56:08

The f40 will be the true f-number after allowance for the magnification - Nikon lenses seems to be unique in giving that value. So maybe f20 or so to the non-Nikon users.

Very nearly a success in DoF terms. In all other respects, I think it's super. 1/13 sec was asking for some camera shake, but you did well to hold it steady and well focussed, maybe the image stabilisation helped, too.

I like the ant! But it's not very clear, so I'd agree with the others to cull it.
