Solitary Bee Entering Nesting Box by Mike Cowdrey, MPSA

April 2026 - Solitary Bee Entering Nesting Box

About the Image(s)

About 3 weeks ago I bought an insect nesting box, and fitted it
to a wall in the garden. Within a few days various solitary bees
had discovered it and I was able to take a macro shot of one, as
it entered a nesting hole.

Nikon D750, Sigma Macro 150mm, AP F9, ISO1250.

Love the detail and the box itself is interesting. Didn't know they made boxes for insects!   Posted: 04/08/2026 12:00:40

Very nice, everything is very sharp, even the 'fur' on the bee. I bought a box last year and no bees came, you are lucky.   Posted: 04/09/2026 14:59:04

I love this image--it almost looks painted! That fur (I'm sure it isn't called fur, but I don't know what to label it) is incredible...I feel like the sharpness, the detail in the capture, the crop, the textures and the feeling of depth with your lights and shadows all work quite well here. I'm weird about "horizon lines" so you might straighten the wood piece on the right in your image...it won't change anything about the bee, but as a viewer, it nags at me and is a simple fix. Very, very well done!   Posted: 04/09/2026 17:02:38
