Blue Dasher by Jeff Fleisher

December 2025 - Blue Dasher

About the Image(s)

This image is of a Blue Dasher dragonfly. It was taken at a pond located in my backyard. I wanted to get a closeup that provided as much definition in the details as I could. Although I was able to get a few images of it in flight they were too soft due to motion and focus blur. I like the definition in the body and wings in this picture. It was taken at f /8 at 1/1600 at ISO 8000 at 400mm. I have a Nikon Z8 camera and was using my 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens. Camera was mounted on a tripod.

I use On1 Photo Raw for my post processing. I applied both noise reduction and sharpening to the Raw image. I also added a little Dynamic Contrast (similar to Clarity in Lightroom) and cropped in on the image. I also added a very subtle vignette to the image.

Super sharp and like the diagonal. Lovely muted colors.   Posted: 12/12/2025 00:27:49

Welcome to our group, Jeff! We'd be really pleased to see more images like this, it's super.

I love the detail and sharpness of the insect, and the restful composition and colours. The background was far away, giving a lovely blur to emphasis the insect.

Personally, I would crop a bit more, equally on all sides, to bring out the detail even more.   Posted: 12/13/2025 21:46:42

Hi Jeff and welcome to the group. I agree with Stuart that a closer crop would make the image even more impressive. You achieved great sharpness, the wings are so delicate.   Posted: 12/18/2025 22:05:36
