Hover fly by Margaret West

December 2025 - Hover fly

About the Image(s)

I took this about 2 months ago at a prairie seeded and controlled by the TNC in Nebraska. Although Hover flies are common, I spent a few hours trying to capture one I liked. They are quite fast. I took this with my 100 mm Macro lens at f11, 1/500 shutter and ISO 640. It was pretty sharp OOC, but I did sharpen the subject more in Topaz.

Good catch. I love the pattern on its body and how the wings show their transparency. If it were my image, I would crop in a bit tighter onto the fly. Example is attached.   Posted: 12/09/2025 19:49:48

A nice photo, I don't think I've seen one still before. An interestingly shaped abdomen.
I like the picture, super detail and good exposure, but agree that a crop would make the subject much clearer whilst still retaining the context. The background is nice, although I'd tone down the light part, top right of the stem.   Posted: 12/13/2025 21:28:25
