Orangish dandelion by Margaret West

July 2025 - Orangish dandelion

About the Image(s)

This is a large dandelion I found on my walk in our hayfield and I was fortunate to get it home intact.

Shot with my R5 Canon mirrorless camera, Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens, photo-stacked 11 images put together in Helicon Focus. I used a Fiddle light and set it on orange, very low power (I think 5% or so?) to light it up

Margaret,
As usual, I love your image. At first glance, when it was displayed on the clipboard with all the other images, I thought it was a shot of fireworks. What do you use to keep your subject in place? I've tried using a devise that is used for creating fishing flies but the opening on the grip os so small.   Posted: 07/06/2025 22:44:08

I use an alligator clip that secretaries use to hold paper memos most of the time. This dandelion had a larger stem since it was quite large (for a dandelion) so I used a goose neck holder that they sell on B&H photo which is very flexible. Only the grip won't hold tiny things like one small section of a dandelion head so the alligator clip works better for that. I wish the alligator clip was flexible though. It stands straight up.   Posted: 07/07/2025 06:02:21

This is a great image...it's sharp, great clarity/definition against the background, and I think the color works very well for nice impact against the black background!   Posted: 07/10/2025 17:48:40

I just love this project of yours with dandelion. there are so many layers and all looks sharp in focus. there is only 1 spike that I want to pluck out at 12:00. the others are all fine going in different directions but the 12:00 is noticeable in a different way. black background is perfect.   Posted: 07/13/2025 00:03:03
