Low tide bounty by Gloria Grandolini

April 2025 - Low tide bounty

About the Image(s)

I took this image to ideally frame it as a triptych with 2 of the close ups of oyster and scallop shells that I have presented to you earlier.

I also took it in the low tide in Provincetown Bay at the tip of Cape Cod.
I kneeled with the macro lens to take the perspective of the hundreds of shells leftby the tide. I focused on the foreground and allowed on purpose some softer shells to give a sense of the continuing sea of shells. I had a vertical version too, but I liked this horizontal one better.

Shot with CANON EOS 80D
100m with Lens EF 100m f/2.8 Macro

1/125 sec f/9 ISO 100

In Lightroom I applied 50% denoise and adjusted exposure.

Not sure this would really be a macro photo but I like the image. I find it very peaceful and like your DOF   Posted: 04/04/2025 03:57:43

Gloria, I think this subject could make for a very strong macro. However, how it is framed, I'm not sure where I am suppose to look. Where is the main subject? Consider getting closer on one of the shells. The other shells will make for a nice blurred background. There is lot's of potential here, just play around with getting closer. I'd love to see what you come up with.   Posted: 04/08/2025 14:05:29

Thanks. Yes I have presented 2 close ups of shells in earlier rounds. I had thought of this one as a broader macro to give the context. But does not seems to works as is..   Posted: 04/14/2025 19:54:10

You are welcome to send in your triptych when finished. Then I think it would be a true macro photo. Go on, we've not had a triptych here so far!   Posted: 04/10/2025 07:22:27

Thanks Stuart, I'll work on it. The one I had thought originally does not really work - too monochromatic. Maybe I need some of the blue of the ocean..

The lighting and the angle are spectacular. I cannot see a macro in this...maybe if you focused on one shell that fills the frame? However, I do think this would be pretty in a triptych, with a true macro of one shell at least.

I have a macro 60mm lens, but unless I turn it onto the 1:1 ratio, I do not get a macro shot. It took me awhile to figure that one out, lol!   Posted: 04/10/2025 19:34:37

Thanks Carol, that would be my idea. Maybe for this one macro does not work…
Actually to make sure I am indeed taking macro images, I have been trying to figure out how do turn my 100 mm macro lens to 1:1 to make sure is true macro. Have not figured it out yet.   Posted: 04/14/2025 20:08:12

Actually I just figured it out in my macro lens - the setting just shows up in manual focus. The good news is the lens can go up to 1:4. Thank you again.   Posted: 04/14/2025 20:19:24
