Crystal plate by John Doyle

February 2025 - Crystal plate

About the Image(s)

This was taken in September 2022 at the Corning Glass Museum in Corning, New York. I used my iPhone with settings ISO 32, 26mm lens, f 1.6 at 1/197 seconds. The image is a close-up of the center of a large crystal plate in their collection. I could not get over the detail achieved.

That's a very attractive pattern, John, which could be any size at all. I like the sharpness and the symmetry.
Corning are masters of small glass things, I visited a factory over here some years ago where they made optical fibres that are only 125 microns (0.005 inches) diameter and have a core of 10 microns (0.0004 inches) diameter! Well beyond macro range to photograph. But they don't have interesting patterns like this!
I guess this didn't have any colour in it. It makes a nice mono image. There is a good spread of shades of grey.
Being symmetrical, I like to look at the corners and see how exactly symmetrical it is. There's a slight amount of difference there, but it doesn't detract for me.

John, Wow amazing detail. The B&W works perfect. Impressive what iPhones can do these days. How big was the plate? just to get a sense of the detail.   Posted: 02/09/2025 23:17:58

I will estimate that the plate was about 14" in diameter. And yes, iPhones are almost as good as real cameras. Thanks for your comment.   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:01:11

Great image, John! Black and White really emphasized the exquisite detail you've captured so well. Crystal is hard to photograph and you've done an incredible job. Did you use an app on your iPhone? Which one? There isn't anything I would change on this-it's perfect.   Posted: 02/10/2025 03:32:15

After I took the photo I did some small adjustments in a free app called Snapseed. It is free, can work only on your phone and it can do amazing stuff. If you use your phone to take photos I would recommend this app. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 02/11/2025 16:04:22
