The Bridalveil Rainbow by John Stumbos

July 2025 - The Bridalveil Rainbow

About the Image(s)

If you have been to Yosemite at any time of the year, you no doubt have been to Tunnel View. This very busy location affords the most expansive view up the Yosemite Valley, with iconic Half Dome in the background and this famous waterfall, Bridalveil, in the foreground off to the right side of your vantage point. On this day I shot many images of the classic valley-wide scene, but I also wanted to do something a little different, so I zoomed in tight at a special moment.

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark IV and my f/4 Canon 70-200 all the way out at 200mm. Exposure: ISO 100, f/11 at 1/125 sec. Our tour leader, Gary Hart, knew there would be a narrow window of time to shoot a waterfall rainbow late in the April afternoon--if we got the right weather conditions. As you can see, we got very lucky!

In post processing with Adobe Camera Raw, I set the profile to camera matching landscape, added 0.75 to the exposure, set the white point at +31 and the black point at -23. I made no adjustments with the contrast slider, but did make subsequent adjustments to add more contrast to the image. Highlights down -79, shadows up +27. White balance as shot (4,750 temp). Color adjustments: vibrance +21, saturation 0. With the effects sliders I added +19 texture, +31 clarity and -7 to dehaze. This had the effect of adding more definition to the to the granite edifice in and around the waterfall without overdoing it. Finally, I tried different aspect ratios for a crop and settled on 1X1--something new for me. This gave more prominence to the waterfall without making it feel too cramped. What do you think?

Visiting Yosemite can be a spiritual experience for any photographer. The Holy Grail is all around you! I will go back definitely, but prefer any season except summer (too crowded). Gary Hart has a blog post about shooting the rainbow at Bridalveil. Here is the URL if you would like to learn more: https://garyhartblog.com/2022/05/22/just-a-dash-of-rainbow/.

Good catch on the rainbow in the waterfall's plunge. Definitely not too cramped. Your focus is on the rainbow...including more would only dilute your subject. The colors and texture of the rocks is also an important feature. More would not be better.   Posted: 07/10/2025 13:34:28

Beautiful photograph! Thanks for including the link and the details of post processing. Did you use a polarizer to deepen the colors of the rainbow? I am surprised how much you were able to smooth out the water at 1/125s.   Posted: 07/14/2025 15:13:02

Thank you, Sarita. Yes, I did use a polarizer, but our workshop leader admonished us to use it carefully so as not to cut out the rainbow effect in the waterfall.   Posted: 07/21/2025 20:46:05

Ive heard so much about this phenomenon and not had anyone I know (other than some professional photographers) give it a try. Nice to see that other folks, not just Pro's, go to capture it! I've heard it can be hit or miss and is almost always crowded during this time.

Congrats on being at the right place and right time and executing a great shot! Really interesting phenomena and I love the image. Rainbows are special ..... we see a lot of them in the rainy season....and they almost always stop me in my tracks and my brain says shoot, shoot, shoot! Gotta love nature's bounty!   Posted: 07/15/2025 18:45:36

Thanks, Sherry. There was more than serendipity at work here. Our workshop leader knew exactly when the rainbow would appear. And, yes, there were a lot of people at Tunnel View, but not many with "real" cameras on tripods. Mostly toursits with smartphone cameras and no clue about the rainbow until those of us in the workshop pointed it out. When I'm looking through my viewfinder, I don't care how many tourists are milling about. It's what I see and how it makes me feel that matters.   Posted: 07/21/2025 20:52:12

Beautiful capture, John. Love the depth of golden color behind the falls. It truly is unique. I can think of nothing that would improve this image. Well done.   Posted: 07/22/2025 00:26:38
