Conowingi Dam Eagles by Judy Haran

April 2025 - Conowingi Dam Eagles

About the Image(s)

I took this photo at Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River in mid March of this year. The eagles come in for the shad fish running in the spring. Most photographers have mirrorless cameras and 600 or 800 lenses. I stick with my current set-up and just hope they fly closer to me. I try to get there twice a year, November and Spring. Follow them on Facebook under Conowingo Dam Eagles.

Nikon D500 and 500 PF, 1/3200, f/ 5.6, ISO 320. I tried for a while with a TC on the lens, but the weather was not sunny and the auto-focus was slow. I'll have to try that again on a brighter day.

Judy, Love this action packed image. I have seen images of bald eagles from this area and have thought of visiting but it has not happened yet. Maybe one of these days.   Posted: 04/11/2025 17:51:49

Balds are thieves for sure. That seems to be a very big draw on the east coast for eagle spotting. Tough shot to get and you managed it just fine. Don't know what your "current setup" is but it seems adequate. I'm always blown away by the lens sizes of wildlife photographers. Who wants to carry that much weight?   Posted: 04/13/2025 15:00:09

Leslie, the 500PF is a very lightweight lens. I used it for several years, and simply because of the weight. I had no trouble managing it.

Whan I switched to Sony I really missed it, the 100-400 is much heavier. Last year I picked up a 300mm 2.8 Prime and I use it with a 1.4 teleconverter. Again a light weight lens. It weighs 2.5 lb and I can manage it nicely.   Posted: 04/13/2025 19:09:00

What a marvelous action shot of those Bald Eagles! Your shot is spot on! The eagles are both in focus and the fish is in the forefront of the action. Amazing how aggressive these birds are in stealing each other's catch. Excellent capture!

I lived in Maryland for 9 years, and never visited Conowingo Dam. Yet many of my Photographer friends recommended I try it. I never learned birds in flight until I moved to Florida, and thought I would be way over my head...and I most certainly would have! Now I regret not trying, but oh well..some day maybe!   Posted: 04/13/2025 19:04:34
