Burrowing Owls by Sarita Yeola

February 2025 - Burrowing Owls

About the Image(s)

Burrowing Owls: We saw these Burrowing Owls by the side of the road in Aruba in the middle of the day. I cropped the original and adjusted the exposure on the sand to make it darker and brightened the Owls to make them stand out.

Burrowing owls are some of my favorite birds on the planet. They are just so cute and sometimes do the funniest poses. They are very widespread. We have them here in CO and I've seen them as far south as Ecuador. You got a nice clean shot and their yellow eyes are captivating.   Posted: 02/08/2025 23:24:24

What a great find and nice shot! Like the lighting coming from the side. I can't think of anything needed as it's great as is. If you want to play with some other perspectives, I would probably crop a little on the left - just because I have been brainwashed on the rule of thirds! Also, would remove the stray grasses immediately to the right of the owl's face but leave the green top right. Just some thoughts.   Posted: 02/11/2025 17:51:15

I really like this photo, Sarita. These burrowing owls are very charismatic and you caught them at just the right moment. Makes me wonder what they were thinking. I have two minor suggestions. First, there needs to be separation between the owl on the right and the blade of brown grass. It's a bit distracting and could probably be cloned out fairly easily. Also, I would be inclined to crop out more from the bottom of the photo since it's out of your DOF. Leave the top alone. Still, a very nice image with a lot of character.   Posted: 02/11/2025 20:02:55

Gotta love Burrowing Owls! Once nesting slows down here I need to go back and visit one of our locations.

Your image is so nice and sharp! Coloring of the owls stands out nicely against the sand. and like Gwen, I too have been brainwashed about rule of thirds. I also agree with John, it would be great if you could remove the grasses on the left side. But the Owls are perfect!!! Great job and you cheered up my day!!! They make me smile!   Posted: 02/13/2025 17:29:33
