About the Image(s)
Power Play
While out on a game drive in Kenya, we came upon a circle of life moment playing out for a Thompsen Gazelle mother and her baby. Three Jackals were successful in bringing down the baby, which was difficult to watch. This photo captures the Jackals' battle to keep their prey as a Hyena came in to steal their hunt. I cropped the picture to focus on the faces and emotions of the rivals.
Shot with my Sony a1 and 200-600 lens at 1/1250, f6.3, ISO 400. Photo cropped with increases in clarity and vibrance in LrC, and denoised and sharpened (Topaz Photo AI).

The jackals don't stand a chance if the hyena is serious. I like the crop. Little over-saturated in my opinion, but great interaction.   Posted: 12/09/2024 04:11:14

Hi Gwen, Great action shot. Right place at the right time!! I like your crop and the subjects are all sharp. I agree with Leslie the yellows are over saturated on my screen.   Posted: 12/11/2024 17:27:25

Thanks, Sarita! I will say it looks different on this site vs what I see on my 3 screens. Have any of you experienced that? Maybe I need to pull down saturation in the future for all shots posted here.

I've never noticed it before....But might I suggest you desaturate some and repost it yourself in a comment and we can look at it. I did not do anything with the image except post it, but when I received it my thought was it was oversaturated. If nothing else next month you can send me the image and I'll post it and you can look to see what it looks like on the site. This site is very picky about size, mainly because many folks would post very large images and cause the sever to become overloaded. so give it a go and see what it looks like when you post directly in a a reply. Then I can check with Tom, our webmaster to see if he has any ideas.   Posted: 12/12/2024 19:58:00

Such an interesting shot that tells a story of survival of the fittest out in the wild.
On my older monitor, I don't see oversaturation as much as the warm tones of the critters aren't too separate from the warm tones of the grasses. Maybe tone down the grasses a bit if possible.
Wonderful timing with this shot.   Posted: 12/12/2024 20:43:32

Thanks, Judy! I like that idea. Honestly I didn't change the colors of the Hyena or Jackals but I did play with the grasses. So I will tone them down.   Posted: 12/12/2024 23:20:23

Fantastic! I have no idea what happened on the other one......but this looks more like the image you sent me. I'm going to place that one in your top one and get rid of the the original one....if I can. I have no idea if it happened on the website or my PC....but I must admit it looked very saturated when I downloaded, then when I posted it even more so....   Posted: 12/14/2024 21:23:00

Nice action shot, Gwen. Glad you got the color balancing issue sorted out. Must have been an exciting trip for you! The circle of life isn't always pretty, is it?   Posted: 12/19/2024 22:23:21
