Baja Gopher Snake by Leslie Larson

December 2024 - Baja Gopher Snake

About the Image(s)

Reptiles have been noticeably neglected by our group. I like snakes and what they do to control the rodent population. We even live symbiotically with our resident prairie rattlesnakes.
I'm always on the lookout for any sort of wildlife and sometimes the showing is so pitiful we have to admire whatever we find. Thus this Baja Gopher snake (in Baja), a close relative to the Bull snakes we have in Colorado.
This photo was over-exposed so I had to tone it down in Photoshop as well as do a tight crop.

Really like the action of this shot. He is camouflaged but stands out nicely. The only thing that could have improved it in my opinion is to get him at eye level. Of course that might not have been a smart thing to do in this case!

The snake isn't dangerous, but I am old and getting at eye level with a snake about impossible. I take your point though.   Posted: 12/09/2024 19:49:24

Leslie, I typically run away from snakes when I see them so I admire you to have stopped and taken this shot. I like how the snake is camouflaged but the green vegetation around the snake makes it stand out and brings the viewers attention to the subject. Its forked tongue sticking out adds drama to the shot.   Posted: 12/11/2024 17:39:37

I do like your composition and the posture of the snake with the tongue out. I see snakes often in some of my regular haunts, but usually try to avoid them. Whenever I post a snake most people shy away from the image....which is why most people don't share snake images......but they are part of our world and I must admit it is a nice image given the positioning and how well it stands out from the background!   Posted: 12/12/2024 20:26:05

Terrific snake shot. I would like it see if it stands out more by masking the snake and making the sand lighter or darker.   Posted: 12/12/2024 21:13:49

A really nice photo, Leslie. Good crop and composition. I especially like the way you captured the "action" with the snake's tongue extended like that. I agree with Judy about creating a little more separation with the background. Great shot nonetheless.   Posted: 12/19/2024 22:37:38
