I created this photograph at a farmers market in Burlington VT on July 1, 2023. I like making street portraits and thought this farmer was really interesting. I wanted a shallower depth of field to blur out the far distance but I didn’t want the items in his stall to be blurred so I went with f8 aperture. I cropped the image a little in order to get the man’s face more in the right side. I desaturated the color in the background to keep the eye away from those objects, and added a little saturation to the produce. I like the color in this case because I think it highlights what he is selling. I used my Canon R5 with an RF24-105 mm F4 lens at 105mm focal length. My shutter was 1/250 and ISO was 640.

Yum, pickled asparagus, I think. My favorite. Therefore, a perfect shot!   Posted: 09/02/2023 00:32:43

Hi Beth, I think this is a great image. Desaturating the background was a good idea, it really helps focus on the subject. To my eye your crop also works very well. I'm glad you kept the image in color.   Posted: 09/09/2023 11:17:32
Thanks! I do prefer it in color.   Posted: 09/18/2023 13:24:24

The subject has such great character in his face. Love that you captured a transaction with someone who is not in the scene, but suggested. Nice vegetable shots also and I like blurring the back ground. I think you did a really nice job!   Posted: 09/14/2023 19:47:50

IMHO it needs to be converted to BW in order to make it a street shot.   Posted: 09/16/2023 15:04:56
Thanks for your perspective. I like this definition of street photography: photography taken in a public space of ordinary people going about their ordinary lives. Using this definition, I don't think a photograph has to be in B&W in order to be considered a street photograph. That said, I think a lot of good street photographs are best in B&W. In this instance, I prefer the color but understand if others prefer the photograph in B&W.   Posted: 09/18/2023 13:28:54

The "farmer" is a standout in the picture. I like your edit and blurring the background is effective. I think the image could work well either in colour OR black and white. The hand certainly suggests a transaction, so it adds to the story. You have a super image right there.   Posted: 09/17/2023 03:10:52
