About the Image(s)
This photo was taken during a battle of the pipe bands (contest). I converted the pic to black and white. I am interested to know which version the group prefers.

Hi Susan, very nice image and I love the B&W rendering, I think it gives a better feel to the subject matter. To my eye you have framed this a little too tight, on the bottom specifically where the feet merge with the bottom of the image. I like the color version too but I think that the greens are overpowering.   Posted: 11/11/2024 14:16:11

Hi Lou,
Thank you for the valuable feedback.
I see your point re framing a little too tight. I really need to get a wider-angled lens.
I have one but it doesn't zoom in much. I suppose I could crop the photo at the knees, for example. The greens are sort of overpowering, that is true.
Cheers.

Yes, cropping just above the knees could work.   Posted: 11/20/2024 01:55:24

Hi Susan, I really enjoy the classic feel you've achieved by using black and white for this shot! The choice emphasizes the unity and focus of the bagpipers and brings out the texture in their uniforms and instruments. The composition is strong, though a little more space around the feet might add to the balance, as they're slightly cut off at the bottom. Overall, the tones and details capture the traditional vibe beautifully, making it a memorable image.   Posted: 11/12/2024 16:42:24

Hi Keisha,
Thank you for the comments. Having more space is something I need to work on. The pipers were on the move so I had to be quick - but there is scope for framing of course. Welcome to the group. We have the best group leader!   Posted: 11/19/2024 23:24:41

Hi Susan, very nice capture of this scenery. I agree with the others that black and white is just right for this image. I would not crop to the knees because to me the legs are part of their traditional clothes. I am honestly not bothered too much from cropping the feets. Indeed, if you look at the work of many street photographers is more focus on the message and not on the "perfect" composition.
Best wishes

Great street shot. It is good example of why black and white is best for street work. I tells a story in all the different faces. IMHO color tends to deminish the story.
