Ghost Elephant by Alison Mees

April 2026 - Ghost Elephant

About the Image(s)

Taken in Amboseli National Park

I liked the elephant walking towards me, but also the white mud on the elephant

Canon R5 mark ii with 100-400mm
F7.1
1/250
ISO 250
340mm

Taken at mid day, so the light was harsh

I cropped the photo to portrait, took down the blacks, added white and took down some of the shadow on the back legs.

Great portrait. I would crop from the top and left and add some more texture and clarity to the bull.   Posted: 04/01/2026 16:17:47

He does look muddy! Great shot. Was he all by himself? How far away was he? How were you protected?   Posted: 04/01/2026 17:20:25

Yes he was by himself and walking towards us - we were in a land cruiser vehicle - so totally safe.   Posted: 04/01/2026 18:41:41

I figured you were safe but it didn't show in the photo!   Posted: 04/01/2026 18:55:23

I agree with Deborah about the crop and texture. I would also try bringing out his eyes by whitening the white and darkening the black. Maybe even darken around the eyes with a very thin black line. He's gorgeous, it looks like he is walking right towards you. Great shot!   Posted: 04/02/2026 20:38:28

I have now cropped top and left. Also gave the elephant more texture and clarity by selecting subject and then took the highlights down on the right ear.   Posted: 04/03/2026 19:31:23

You might come down even a tad more from the top.   Posted: 04/15/2026 16:04:26
