Yellow Legged Gull by Frans Gunterus, QPSA

May 2025 - Yellow Legged Gull

About the Image(s)

Canon R6 M2. EF lens 24-105 mm @ 71.03 mm. 1/1250 sec at f/8.0, ISO 100

This bird was right above my head during breakfast in Taormina sea view Hotel in Italy. Later I know it was a yellow-legged gull. I never realized the eye was so clear and the feather was so smooth until I enlarged it using Lightroom. This was all edited solely in Lightroom.

Beautiful! Very focused and the sky set off the bird beautifully. I wonder what the purpose of the red spot on the lower beak is.   Posted: 05/05/2025 23:52:02

Hi Ginny. Thank you always the first giving response to our images. You have such a good question. I found the answer from Google. The red spot on a Yellow-legged Gull's beak is a visual cue that chicks use to stimulate their parents to regurgitate food. Thanks for asking.   Posted: 05/07/2025 06:14:10

Hey Frans! What a fantastic way to kick off the day! Breakfast with your camera and a stunning subject - your capture is great! Your work in Lightroom is spot on, especially the attention to detail in the eyes and feathers. Thanks so much for sharing your image with us!   Posted: 05/09/2025 15:49:50

This is beautiful. So sharp, without being pixelated. That eye appears to be looking right at you.
I wonder how it would look if you replaced the wood with more blue sky. I find it a little distracting.   Posted: 05/09/2025 19:57:36
