I took this shot during sunrise at Nickerson Beach, Long Island. June is peak hatching season for nesting shorebirds including this Black Skimmer and her chick.
This area of the beach is protected nesting grounds, so one has to avoid disturbing the feeding of chicks.
Lying on the ground to get a low-level shot is required. One, you see the world through their eyes, and two standing up triggers a flurry of dive bombing terns protecting their nests. It can get quite intense!

What a great shot! Everybody is in great focus -you can see eyes in the mother, baby and fish. Everything else is out of focus. Posted: 04/05/2025 20:39:14
