February 2025 - Vigilant juvenile Fer-De-Lance

About the Image(s)

I took this shot on one of my photography tours in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. Eduardo, who owns the property, catches these nocturnal creatures so we can photograph them in a safe controlled environment. Photographed on my Canon R5 Mark ll on a 600mm f4. I was about ten feet away. The shallow depth of field creates a smooth background and places the business end of the viper in sharp focus.

Very focused! I like the background and foreground being the same color, it frames the snake.   Posted: 02/05/2025 01:45:04

Thanks Ginny. There was a bit of art direction. I added a banana leaf a few feet behind the snake to block the existing background. Here's the original so you can see the crops and adjustments.   Posted: 02/06/2025 15:56:26

The detail in the scales is beautiful. The banana leaf is a great idea, I might have to borrow that idea! Crop is perfect with the head in the bottom right third.   Posted: 02/07/2025 17:38:51

Hi Richard. Welcome to the club. I love the shallow DOF. The snake and it's eye look prominent. I don't know your shooting condition. I would normally wait until the snake head is high or periscoping. I know it's not easy to obey the ethic of wildlife photography. It's an excellent post process to me.   Posted: 02/15/2025 08:46:28
