Roseate Spoonbill on a Branch by Howard Frank

January 2025 - Roseate Spoonbill on a Branch

About the Image(s)

I made this image last winter at the alligator farm in St Augustine Florida. I have been trying to get a good picture of this bird for several years and failed. Taken with my Nikon Z8 and 180 to 600 lens, hand held at f/6.3, 1/3200 sec, ISO 160 and minus 1 1/3 step Exposure Bias. I processed in DXO Pure Raw and Lightroom.

Welcome to DD90!

I have been to the same alligator farm shooting Roseate Spoonbills! They are very difficult to photograph! You have a great shot. The clarity, colors and sky are great. That eye is looking right at me!   Posted: 01/14/2025 20:20:06

Amazing, the eye is so sharp. The only thing I would do is add a little bit on the top, and extend the left side an inch or more to give the bird more room in front of it. Love the way one foot is off the ground to show he is walking. He just needs more room to walk into. Great shot!   Posted: 01/14/2025 21:48:34

HHey Howard, I've been on the lookout for this bird too, and I'm so happy you finally got a shot of it! Someday I hope to do the same. Your efforts were totally worth it, and your image is absolutely stunning. I also really appreciate you sharing your post-processing details. It's always great to learn from others. Keep up the amazing work!   Posted: 01/21/2025 11:51:20
