About the Image(s)

Another image from my visit to Door County in Wisconsin last month.

This is probably my favorite lighthouse on the Lake Michigan coast, and I have quite a few pictures of it. I processed 3 exposures for this HDR image, and for the final 16X9 aspect ratio I used Generative Fill to fill in the sides.

I'm not sure about the wider image. I processed it to fit onto my 16X9 TV, but I think I like the original aspect ratio better. It makes the lighthouse appear a bit bigger and closer to the camera. What do you think?

Hi Drema,
I like the 16:9 aspect ratio version the best. Also using AI to fill in the sides you avoided cropping to get to that ratio I suspect.

I especially like what you did to the sky.   Posted: 07/04/2024 21:25:17

Thanks, Don. Yes, after sitting with it for a while I've decided I like the 16X9 aspect ratio better too. Yes, adding to the sides helped avoid having to crop out part of the picture to get to that ratio. But it would probably make entering the image into competition more difficult (many competitions are starting to set rules against adding things via AI).   Posted: 07/07/2024 21:48:24

That's true. I think PSA would more than frown. But for personal use is another matter.   Posted: 07/08/2024 00:26:01

Hi Drema, I agree with Don. I like the 16:9 aspect the best. I think that you did a good job handling the range of light, the whites in the lighthouse look good.   Posted: 07/04/2024 21:36:49

Thanks, Lou. Yes, the range of light was a bit difficult and wouldn't have worked without multiple exposures. A judge in a competition yesterday took points off because the lighthouse light wasn't on. It would have been nice if it had been on, but I think it is obvious that it wasn't dark yet. If I go back there anytime soon I might try to capture a similar image just as the light comes on in the evening.   Posted: 07/07/2024 21:51:23

Great sky very nice composition. I think a book of Lighthouse photo's might be very nice.   Posted: 07/05/2024 21:48:26

Hi Alex. Thanks for the suggestion. I have collected a lot of lighthouse images trying to make a portfolio of them, especially with night-time Milky Way shots overhead. But collecting them with the purpose of creating a book is a very good idea, and I think I will plan to do that!   Posted: 07/07/2024 21:53:50

This is another great shot, I like the soft evening tones of the trees, water, and clouds.   Posted: 07/09/2024 00:00:30

Very nice job on the HDR post, looks natural. and as others have said I like the "mood" of the image.

Comment on the crop....the lighthouse is a tiny bit off center. To my eye it should be exactly centered or moved of to one side or the other, in this case probably crop in from the left.   Posted: 07/17/2024 02:38:00

Thank you, Pete. Yes, the image is slightly off-center to the left, but I didnÂīt consider it a significant issue because I thought the sun in the background off-center kind of balanced it out. In any case, I cropped it down (on the right) to center it, but had to take some off the top to keep the same 16X9 aspect ratio. I think I like that it seems to be a bit closer view, but now it feels a little too heavy on the left side because of a seemingly wider expanse there. I'm not sure which I like best. What do you think?   Posted: 07/17/2024 17:56:33
