About the Image(s)

This image was taken in the Gulf of America just a few miles west of Tarpon Springs FL.
The area is restricted to launch, so I did launch from a boat. A bit challenging returning the drone.
A bit processed and did replace the sky using Photoshop.

Hi Mike, this is a place I have been by many time both in a boat and walking the beach from the boat. You have made a dramatic interpretation of the scene. I would say that in terms of composition, it might be better to have flown at a lower altitude so that the top of the lighthouse was above the horizon.   Posted: 07/09/2025 23:48:51

Very good point, as a matter of fact a few years ago I was at a conference , NECC New England Camera Council and a speaker said that most impact images of people when horizon is shown is to have the shoulders of people above the horizon. Good point!   Posted: 07/15/2025 00:39:00

Hi Mike, I love lighthouses! I agree with Richard about shooting from a lower angle so that the top of the lighthouse is above the horizon.

Not being familiar with Florida, I had to look up Tarpon Springs. Looks like the sun sets over the ocean, just like on the West Coast. Rather than a sky replacement, I'd love to see you try this again when the sun is actually setting -- or very early in the day when the sun is just hitting the top of the lighthouse. Also, what would this look like if you are offshore shooting towards land?

I've never tried to launch or land my drone from a boat! Impressive!   Posted: 07/16/2025 19:26:40

Hi Mike, this is a quite dramatic interpretation, to my eye it's not very realistic, which is not a problem for me as we are in this for the art not necessarily realism. I like the composition but I agree with the comments about the horizon. I too would be quite hesitant to launch from a boat.   Posted: 07/24/2025 21:41:48

Hi Mike, sorry I am so late in commenting this month.

Yes, it would have been better if the tip were either well above or well below the horizon. The purple is obviously a matter of taste but it was too extreme for me.   Posted: 07/27/2025 20:00:07

Hi Mike... agree with most of the comments... I love purple, but this is just a bit too much. Maybe just add the purple to the sky portion and not the entire image?   Posted: 07/28/2025 21:04:49
