Channel Light - Erie, PA
This lighthouse is located on a pier within Presque Isle State Park in Erie and helps guide ships as they enter Erie Harbor. The drone took off from the other side of the channel to avoid disobeying PA law. Another complicating issue is a US Coast Guard Station close by from which helicopters are launched. The air space is G but eyes are open for choppers. The setting sun was to the left and my original hope was to have the sun behind the light but this turned out better. Shot last August while on a 1 week road trip. Processed with Affinity Photo.

Great subject and a great composition. I like how the pier/walkway comes at a diagonal out of the lower left. It has some lovely late-day colors, and the sky is beautiful. The lighthouse, however, doesn't seem to have a sharp focus, nor does the pier. And it seems to be a little dark and overprocessed. Perhaps it was done in this way for artistic reasons, but I'm sorry, it doesn't work for me. I do like the red bars along the edges of the pier though.   Posted: 03/09/2025 11:59:08
Right, I have to be more careful with the focus. Sometimes even when the focus peaking shows a subject is in focus, the object is a little off focus in the image created. I'll try to increase f/ stop (decrease aperture) to improve focus range when possible. This was a dark image to start with.   Posted: 03/26/2025 20:18:12
Nice going on this one. Comments: parts of the sky seem blown out. Perhaps -- if you are not doing this -- use the AEB function and them HDR Merge in LR.
Also -- although overall great composition -- the spire is nearly impinged on the horizon. I would have shot from either a little higher or lower elevation to get a clear separation   Posted: 03/11/2025 13:26:13

Thanks for you comments Pete. Good catch with spire, should have seen this myself. I am currently using 3 and 5 shot AEB's. and I have the ability to focus stack, exposure stack, stack for noise reduction, and HDR with Affinity Photo. I need to play around with these more!   Posted: 03/26/2025 20:27:43
Nice image Richard and way to go in getting it. I love the lighting and the lead in line. Based on Pete's comments I would prefer see the lighthouse from a higher view point to keep it below the horizon. Well done.   Posted: 03/13/2025 16:30:53

What a great chance to capture this light house at the right time. The colors seems to coordinate well, giving it a nice mood.   Posted: 03/26/2025 18:01:14
Thanks Mike, I do think the photo captures some of ambience of that evening. If you Google 'Erie PA sunsets' you will find that people say this is a place to see the most beautiful sunsets in the world. I was only there for 2 nts, so I've seen nicer elsewhere.   Posted: 03/26/2025 20:37:37
