January 2025 - Manistee North Pier Lighthouse with Crepuscular Rays

One nice thing I know we all appreciate about shooting with a drone is the ability to get into positions to capture things we otherwise could not capture. This image, overlooking Manistee North Pier Lighthouse in Michigan captured the crepuscular rays just before sunset. I tried cropping it to show just the end of the pier, the crepuscular rays, and the clouds around the sun, but when I did that, I lost the big expansive feel of the photo that I liked so much.

I had to lookup that lighthouse to answer the question about what the rigging was on the pier: it's apparently a walkway above the ice used in the winter.
I like the image a lot and I feel the expansive space you mentioned (before I read your description). I wonder if it use a slight about of curve adjustment? Posted: 01/12/2025 20:11:47

Wow, that is interesting about the catwalk on the pier. I didn't know that (and you would think, living in a cold climate, I would know that). Thanks for the info, I learned something today!
Do you mean a curve adjustment to increase contrast? I did apply a little to the area around the rays, but I didn't want to darken the clouds in that area, so I was very careful (I did experiment with increasing the contrast for the entire photo, but it darkened the clouds and took away the soft effect that I liked in the photo, but perhaps a little contrast might work) Posted: 01/12/2025 21:46:46

It may not necessarily be curves adjustment but just a little something to give it slightly more punch, the lighthouse maybe just a little more white. But this of course is personal opinion and as you know, I sometimes go a little too far with saturation. But the more I look at it the more I think leave it as is. Posted: 01/14/2025 01:12:56
Hi Drema, I read Richard's comments and perhaps the lighthouse could be a little brighter but it is the shadow side so it should be a little darker. I think that this is a great photo. I really like the subject and the composition. The way the leading line lead my eye to the lighthouse and sunset is great. Posted: 01/14/2025 17:24:55
