About the Image(s)

Back to Iceland. Alderjarfoss is one of Iceland's most scenic waterfalls. From the glaciers in the center of the island it pours through distinctive basaltic columns into a large pool before flowing north, ultimately out to the ocean. Our day there in September 2022 was overcast with rain threatening (it's Iceland), but we tried to ignore that and pushed our rental SUV down the 25 mile dirt road from the ring road in north Iceland. We did get some light showers while there. Because of the remoteness it gets far fewer visits than other waterfalls.

Alderjarfoss is mostly shot from the cliffs overlooking the pool and that is where I launched from. I wanted to be as low as possible and I drafted one of my travelemates to spot the drone -- making sure I didn't get into the spray -- while I cautiously lowered it towards the surface of the pool.

After I was done shooting I was quite happy when the drone popped up over the top of the cliff!

Not much color that day and the columns are all black anyway, so I converted to BnW. I bracketed five images which was important because of the extreme contrast between the basalt and white spray. Other than settings levels, sharpening, etc., I don't remember too much other post.

Hi Pete, what a dramatic image. The color is good but to my eye the B&W version is spectacular. I think that you have done a wonderful job with the tonality and sharpness and I can almost feel the power of the water. I don't bracket my drone images, I think I need to give that a try.   Posted: 12/08/2024 00:03:56

Pete, well done! Like Lou said I can almost feel the air movement created by the falls and shown on the water's surface. Overall, the image has almost a prehistoric look.   Posted: 12/15/2024 02:20:48
