About the Image(s)

During a long wait for lunch at a winery in Sicily in April, I was attracted to the play of light between the various glasses of wine we had for tasting. I used the camera at hand, a Nikon Z7 II with 24-120mm f/4S lens at 120mm focused as close as possible on the bubbles in a glass of red wine. The handheld exposure was ISO 800, f/10, 1/15 second. The clarity and vibrance were raised in Adobe Camera RAW. The image was cropped to make the bubbles predominate. Some reflections were removed, and the background was darkened in Photoshop Elements. The golden highlights resulted from the neighboring glass of white wine. Finally, the food arrived, and I stopped playing.

I like the gold bubbles...very nice. How did it taste? Did you think of the song? I think this is a very nice blend of tones and colors.   Posted: 07/06/2024 19:10:35

Hi Lauren, The wine wasn't that great which was part of the reason I spent time getting something out of the experience: the images. The song did come to mind. Karl   Posted: 07/06/2024 19:59:32

Well, I did not recognize the song title, so I googled it. There was Lawrence Welk and a tune that was very familiar. Thanks for the memories. The bubbles are lovely and look like jewels on a red velvet cloth draped over a pedestal. The composition is well balanced and the central triangle is a nice element. I love the way the light reflects gold on the glass rim on the right and on the bubbles. I agree that this is a MoMa month.   Posted: 07/12/2024 01:39:54

Karl - Great and imaginative use for bad wine. The curves and color palette work well to show an interesting image with impact. The subtle reflections in the background add interest. My only nit is that I would like to see a tad more of the image. As an illustration I adjusted the bubbles brightness -15 and contrast -10.   Posted: 07/12/2024 22:12:23

Wonderful way to pass the time, Karl! Great treatment of the bubbles and also of calming the background. Could you sell this to a fancy restaurant?   Posted: 07/23/2024 15:58:26
