About the Image(s)

I have often wanted to make light drawings in interesting or inaccessible spaces. The smoldering ruins of the NVF factory in Yorklyn, Delaware, was artistically attractive but officials didn't allow access over the fallen materials and embers.
Light drawings are images made by a light source aimed directly at the camera. On the other hand, light painting is using light sources to shine on surfaces which then reflect the scene to the camera.
My light drawing images are made with a tripod mounted camera set to f8 or f/11 with the shutter set to Bulb and controlled with a wireless remote. Using the remote allows me to be 10-30 feet from the camera and use various shapes/colors/combinations of LED light devices to draw the image.
Photoshop allows combining a light drawing made against a black background with a conventional image by setting the light drawing layer mode to 'Lighten'. I took three different light drawing technique images and layered them on a darkened version of the smoldering factory ruin to create a sampler of light drawings just as my grandmother may have stitched a sampler of her needlework.
The spherical light drawing was made with a motorized rig I built to create circles as I move the spinning apparatus through 180 degrees to visually create a sphere. LED dog collar lights and burning sparklers were attached to the apparatus arms as the light sources.

You are moving into the Halloween presentation with a ghost, an owl, and an orange sphere pumpkin. Very creative! I am impressed with your spherical machine.   Posted: 09/10/2023 15:37:07

Karl - fascinating project and I would imagine hard to arrive at these definable shapes. In my view the owl is the most successful, though the body is comes through due to its whimsey. I think that the spheres are a technical triumph but I do not think work here in that for me they lack a contextual excuse.
Perhaps two "people" throwing a "ball" would work better.
Seeing your ability to render shapes I would love to see the owl with a pussy cat set on the sea in a pea-green boat ...   Posted: 09/14/2023 12:04:06

At the risk of being obtuse, I love the owl and the spooky dude but find the yellow ball of "whatever" to detract from the atmosphere you've created. Without that ball, I'm totally spooked!   Posted: 09/18/2023 20:01:25

MARVELOUS! I love the "sampler" theme. The background of the decaying factory sets the perfect mood for the samples. My favorite is the owl. From afar it really looks like an owl. Yet my old pareidolia kicked in again when I enlarged this sample; it resembles two parents overlooking a baby in a crib. The bright and sparking nested spheres, to me, reflect the factory's history, and Helix Man reminds us of the carcinogenic hazards many factories generated. There is a story here!   Posted: 09/18/2023 20:04:06
