About the Image(s)

My image submitted for April represents the practical application of two pieces of coaching from mentors in photography; one specifically for the camera settings and lighting for the camera used in this shot. The camera is an OM Systems TG-7, a terrific point/shoot I use on occasion due to its simplicity. The camera is set to RAW, and aperture priority. The shutter speed is 1/125. Instead of using a strobe, I mounted a 2200 lumen video light on the camera tray. Interestingly, to get the lighting right the zoom had to be active just a bit. The location is in Monterey Bay; I dive this spot often due to the sheltered aspect of the cove.
The other tip I received was regarding distance. In some of my prints it was noted that, when mounted, overlapped the edge of the matboard. Our photography studio locally, Spectrum, has a curator who is a retired Fresno City College Photography professor. He gave this advice: “get the distance underwater from the target and think is perfect, then back up”. The image is the result of these two tips!

Hi Chris, Underwater lighting is challenging. You used plenty of flash and did great post processing to make the anemone stand out nicely. Consider burning in some of the peripheral bright areas which can distract the viewer's eye from the subject. Karl   Posted: 04/12/2025 21:34:27

The editing has really enhanced this underwater shot…making it much more vivid.
I agree with Karl that burning would help the viewer focus more on the main subject.   Posted: 04/16/2025 16:49:21

Thank you! I'll have to learn what "burning" something in means :)   Posted: 04/17/2025 16:39:15

Ah, OK so selectively making part of the image darker :). Copy that!
