About the Image(s)

Another Kelby Year 2 assignment--a self-portrait. Going for something original-- I used a 20x22 picture frame buried in sand about 10' from camera upside down on tripod at sand level. Marked spot 20' past frame, and used 10 sec timer to run & pose. My original idea is that a mirror would give me a different sky and be really cool, but it cropped my reflection off too small, regardless of how I moved the mirror or frame (see example I posted). I think I would need a bigger frame and longer mirror to make the reflection idea work. Real sunset Monday night heavily saturated, then I duplicated & flipped reflection. Photographed 2 nights, about 4 hours each for figuring out setup on Redington Beach near Tampa, Florida.

Post processing: I had to rotate all images, as they are all upside down with the camera upside down. cropped vertical, some changes in Lightroom got me to one of my images you see here. Then into Photoshop to use ON1 post processing to heavily saturate, then select top image and flip with Transform. Then used Liquify in Photoshop to trim up my thighs and waist. Happily, arms overhead thins a lot of issues.

I placed 2nd out of 80 students. Onto Year 3 starting December 2025!

Canon R5, Canon RF 24-105, Sirui tripod with camera upside down. ISO 250 35mm. f/14. 1/200sec

It is admirable that you spent time and effort to make the image. However, I felt your technical part overpowered the natural look from the original. It is all personal taste, of course. I like your original 2 as it is.   Posted: 12/04/2025 22:26:21

Thanks, Jean! Do you like this version? It was photographed the night before. I don't like the pose as well.   Posted: 12/07/2025 02:33:32

This is fantastic work - the amount of thought, experimentation, and effort you put into the setup really shows in the final result. The concept is creative, the execution is impressive, and the final image reflects all that hard work beautifully. The sky is a little oversaturated for my taste, but overall it's really great work.   Posted: 12/06/2025 01:48:07

Thanks, Sunil! I will rework it making it a little less intense. I did want to make it a fantasy type pic and a "normal pic" because I can't do much post processing with my birds.   Posted: 12/07/2025 02:41:09

This is a really cool concept photo. The geometry of the reflection doesn't match the rest of the image and if the reflection were from water then it would be slightly darker than the rest of the image. Here's a suggestion: Why don't you put the mirror on the other side of the picture frame. Also I might consider drill a hole in the side of the frame and inserting a small rod to suspend it above the ground and then edit out the rod in post processing. This way the frame wouldn't have to be stuck in the sand and it would appear to be over the mirror.   Posted: 12/06/2025 21:37:23

Hi Ed, The reflection is just the top image flipped, nothing is changed. I did not use the mirror for my final.

The reflection isn't meant to be water. The mirror is to get the sky reflection, which adds a different image. Hmmm...not sure what the reflection would be after the frame and 20' from me. But worth a try. I could try your post idea, too. The reason for the frame in the ground is so your feet fit. It's tricky to hit the right spot so your feet fit. You can see what happened with my cousin in the frame with me. Of course, I added the night sky, I photographed it in the Badlands.

Thanks for all of your great ideas!   Posted: 12/07/2025 02:55:22

Poor Leonardo! I'm sure he would be very sad that his incredible work has turned into my festive derivative!   Posted: 12/13/2025 15:21:56

I really like this image and the experimentation that you did to get it. I'm not quite sure I understand all the set-up techniques but I do understand the post-processing. I love the clarity you achieved and the full "reflection" by doing the transform technique. The sky is a bit saturated but it fits with the objective you were trying to achieve. Great job!   Posted: 12/14/2025 00:05:20
