About the Image(s)

On a recent photo walk at the Old Penitentiary prison, I came across this building corner near a beautiful rose garden area. I thought it hilarious that they had inmates build a
garden and then paint a sign to not loaf in the area.

I cropped the image, brightened the building, darkened the garden, improved the clarityand texture of each.
It needs something but not sure what. Your suggestions for improvement are appreciated.

I like the contrast between the warm background and cool foreground. I would have liked to see a little more of the scene at the bottom and on the left.   Posted: 10/03/2025 17:59:03

Good for you to see this and see a composition in it. I know what you were going for, but I'm not seeing the pretty rose garden area. We just see some unattractive bushes.

Perhaps a longer crop so we see your pretty garden? I do like Ed's idea to add a little more to the bottom and left so its not quite so tight. But seeing that rose garden will be key to bringing out the Catch-22 of the situation.   Posted: 10/04/2025 01:27:30

Due to the time of year I was there they had cut or pulled most of the garden for the end of season. The bushes shown were about the only thing not dirt. So next spring I need to go back when there is something interesting in the garden.

I think I have more of the bottom and left of the scene. My original thought was that that area overpowered the scene but will take another look at it. It probably doesn't need much though.   Posted: 10/08/2025 22:32:54

Interesting photo! The whole purpose of a photo walk is to capture the little things people usually overlook. I do a lot of street and documentary photography myself, so I really appreciate this. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 10/04/2025 02:49:39

I really like it! I'm picturing it as a painting of textures, colors, lines, and planes. To make it pop and make a statement, I'd darken the garden area and tone down the colors so it blends in with the rest of the planes.   Posted: 10/04/2025 21:06:22

I concur with the comments above. To me, the two parts of the image do not seem connected, but rather as parts of two unrelated images.   Posted: 10/06/2025 22:58:32
