About the Image(s)

Camera - Sony a6700, lens 18-135, I did use a tripod placed about 3-3.5 ft away. I zoomed in a bit so think I was around 27 mm lens. The 6700 camera body increases the lens by a factor of 1.5.

The background was my desk monitor turned off, of course, and the shot glass was sitting on my drawing pad.

I didn’t do much to the photo in Camera Raw - clarity, a bit of texture and darkened the background a bit. In Photoshop I used the remove tool to remove the reflection in the shot glass and some of the dust particles that were on the computer monitor background.

This was basically an experiment to see if I could do a still life close up. I was on a zoom call on my iPad and was multi-tasking when I took this.

I was experimenting with a black background set up in low light with close-up work (ok, I was multi-tasking while on a Zoom call). I had put the garlic bulb into water 2 weeks before this to see if I could get roots growing. When successful I thought it looked interesting.and would be a good subject to try close-up.

f/5.6, ISO 6400 1/80sec

Another person who is multi-tasking on a Zoom call! I have to say I have never done such a complex project in a Zoom call! I'm busy writing birthday cards and filing bills, lol.

I love the image. I can't believe you got such a black background from a black monitor! My suggestion would be to name it "Garlic", since the roots are not what draws my attention.

Great experiment!

I got lucky that the monitor and table top were pretty black. I did increase the blackness of the background but not by much. There also wasn't much direct light on them.   Posted: 05/06/2025 22:18:46

NICE! I'm going to go to the store and get a garlic bulb myself because I like this so much...   Posted: 05/05/2025 18:34:35

I really like the image! The black background really made your subject pop. By the way, the latest version of Photoshop has a fantastic reflection removal with Camera Raw Filter that even works with non-raw files. In previous versions, it only worked with RAW files using Camera Raw.   Posted: 05/05/2025 18:56:53

I like the lighting and the unusual subject. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions.   Posted: 05/07/2025 01:23:29
