About the Image(s)

f/4 1/40 second ISO 500 EV -0.33 24mm
Canon 6D (from 2014) Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L lens

I’ve been stuck indoors lately due to the extreme cold here lately, so I have been going through some old photos. This photo is from 2014. This is with my old Canon 6D camera which is very limited compared to modern cameras.

I spent several hours working on this photo one day but couldn’t get it right. That night I was doing Photoshop in my dreams and I worked out the formula. I got up the next morning and started over again from the original RAW file and had it exactly how I wanted in in about 20 minutes.
This sort of thing happens to me all the time.

No part of this image was created with AI. I did a lot of dodging, but no burning. I went around the edges of the mountains and trees on the sky line and removed some halos with the clone tool. I used the color mixer brush tool to bring out some color where the clouds are blown out. I used Adobe Denoise in Camera RAW to reduce the noise and that was set at 50%. I cropped the image to give it a level horizon. I added three adjustment layers to the image, one to brighten the center, one was a color filter for the Maroon Bells mountains only, and one was a Vibrance layer to reduce the vibrance (I hate over saturated photos).

YOW!! My favorite pic by you! GREAT post-processing! Everything is super crisp, really realistic, the reflection is crystal clear. Great sky, although my only suggestion is that the yellow in the cloud might be a bit too much and doesn't match the yellow in the reflection. My thought would be that since the mountain and reflection and aspen trees are the stars of the show, the sky could lose a bit of intensity of the cloud with yellow.

Hmmm...going to see if I can program my brain to solve photo problems in my sleep--and then remember the solution when I wake up!   Posted: 02/04/2025 03:26:06

Thanks for the complement. Well when I signed up for PSA discussion groups the guy in charge said to submit images with problems, not your best images so I've been doing that. This month I decided to submit a better image. As for the difference between the sky and it's reflection, first reflections on water are always darker than the sky. The reflection won't be as bright unless the image has been manipulated. Second, there is always a color shift in the reflection. So taking your advice I painted in some more color in the edges of the clouds which are completely blown out in the original image from the camera. I used a levels adjustment layer with a luminosity mask to make this enhancement in this new version.   Posted: 02/04/2025 23:26:12

Wow, nice rework. Yes, I like to use images that I'm not in love with, as its helpful to get other's ideas.

Hmmm...Love this image. But, I still feel something is a bit off with the big yellow cloud and its reflection. We'll see what the rest group thinks.

To me, the stars of this image are the aspen leaves and I like it more when the aspens are brighter and the clouds and their reflections are much less dramatic. Finally, I prefer that the mountains on the sides are brighter.   Posted: 02/08/2025 02:52:28

I did crank up the brightness on the clouds and aspen and I like it. Good suggestion, thanks!   Posted: 02/11/2025 18:35:35

You did a wonderful job in post processing both in the 1st and the 2nd version. I do agree with Robert on the cloud and their reflections. Robert's modified version on the cloud looks more realistic in terms of the color tones.   Posted: 02/08/2025 19:45:25

Great landscape and well-processed! My only suggestion would be to tone down the clouds a bit-just a personal preference-but your processing looks great as well.   Posted: 02/15/2025 02:23:46
