About the Image(s)

Almost 20 years ago I photographed a barnyard which had an old pump amidst a field of grasses. I liked the pump and the grasses but that never seemed enough to make an interesting image. So, I straightened the image, eliminated the utility lines, brightened the dark trees and eliminated the tree on the left side. The result is my second image.

But I did not like the four tree image and especially the position of the pump. So, in my final image I eliminated the tree on the right side and then moved the pump to a more dynamic position. I think my final image has a much better composition as it allows your eye to move around the image in a circular pattern.

I like reading about your decision process and I agree with all your choices. On my monitor, the golden grass seems just a bit bright. And the green trees and green grass seems a bit too green. I think darkening it a bit would just enhance it.

It's a lovely image!   Posted: 11/03/2024 00:49:58

It is an interesting subject. To me, the trees looked better in the original. Their lighting in your final image feels unnatural. Also to me, the composition of your final image feels almost too good to be true.   Posted: 11/04/2024 00:22:59

This is a nice photo. I felt the color was a little off so I edited it and played with the color. It seemed to have an excessively blue cast to it. I made the pump black and white which I felt looked better. I noticed that the ceder trees had a lot of gray and black so I painted in in color using a new layer. I added color noise to the paint layer and added monochrome noise to the brightness-contrast color mask to give it texture.   Posted: 11/07/2024 15:38:18

Jim, your final composition draws the eye beautifully around the image, and the repositioned pump adds great balance. The color adjustments suggested could enhance the natural tones-overall, a lovely, thoughtful edit!   Posted: 11/11/2024 17:25:18

I think it's just perfect. Great work on the cropping process. Great that you stuck with it until you were satisfied.
One thought to drive you crazy, as it has me already. Consider a left-right reflection.   Posted: 11/12/2024 04:26:53
