August 2026 - Freezing Conditions
About the Image(s)
Taken in Yellowstone NP many years ago. The temperature was -27F and the moisture their breath was freezing to their fur. I have been back to Yellowstone many times since but have never been able to replicate the conditions again.

Hi, Bruce - I've never been to Yellowstone in the winter and judging from this image, I probably wouldn't want to. I can see the eye and the lips through the frost. With all that muscle and the thick fur coat, he was probably warm enough but still... His resilience to extreme low temperature is amazing. Your image tells a powerful story. Bruce - you really have captured the feeling of pure cold here, in bright morning sunlight and deep snow. Fabulous! Must have been a great experience!
We enjoyed 8 days there in winter 2012 and yes it was minus 20's for many of the mornings, but it didn't feel that cold and the hoar frost soon melted off the buffalo in the sun. It was a very memorable trip! Posted: 08/08/2026 21:07:09

Bruce, it is amazing as how the bison's tolerate the cold and the snow. Interesting how they dig deep into the snow looking for food. The white of the snow makes him stand out. Posted: 08/23/2026 00:34:41

You have captured the feeling of the deep cold in this shot. It always amazes me how these creatures can withstand such low temperatures.
My only suggestion is regarding the blue tones in the snow. I find them a little too strong, so I took the image into Photoshop and reduced the amount of blue in the whites and lightened them slightly. I hope you like the result. Posted: 08/24/2026 08:29:18
